A lot of men out there need to come to terms with the fact that we’ve got psychological problems with stress and anxiety and depression and in a lot of men it shows very strongly but it also shows in women, boys and girls, elderly people etc and a lot of the issues are relevant to all genres.
Personally I’ve suffered depression, anxiety and stress and for me it’s been the way that my life’s gone – relationships with people problems, employment problems, Learning new skills moving from one work environment to another and forming new relationships with people. I always seem to overthink things that don’t matter and make myself ill worrying.
That’s how the brain works because it’s all down to the electrochemical information being passed around the brain.
We live in a society which is far too complex for the way that the human brain is designed to cope because only a few hundred years ago we were actually living out there bartering with sheep and cows and we were living in an environment which was much simpler and less.
It was less stressful because it was all about survival and we got loads of exercise and ate healthier food. Now we’ve been cast over a few hundred years into a situation where we live in a high-tech environment with high tech jobs. Employment situations can change from week to week sometimes never knowing where your next penny’s coming from.
The financial issues of modern life and raising children and trying to pay for the things for children’s schooling and maybe illnesses – all these insane stressful things constantly every day overloads the brain and sometimes your brain says ‘No I’m not working anymore‘.
What it does is it slows itself down, it casts itself off and then suddenly the brain is not working and functioning as efficiently as it should do so you find yourself in a situation where you just can’t cope, your brain is not coping because that network of chemical information tries to stop itself from overloading. Its interfered with and then you become confused and you may rush decisions, you spit your dummy out, you lose your temper and you don’t get on with people.
You become antisocial because the social environments around you aren’t adapt to you.
It’s not you not being adapt to the social environment because you were never designed to be, it’s the social environment around you not adapting to you and not allowing you to do what you need to do at your own pace so that your brain can function and your brain can process the information that’s happening.
You need to think to yourself – I’ve got to sit back and I’ve got to observe things around me and I’ve got to categorise things and I’ve got to work out what’s important and what’s not.
Financial issues can be a massive part of mental health issues, but whether it’s work or dealing with your car braking down – Try and put them on the back burner while you get your brain back in order. This is what I was doing wrong.
I was worried about finances, I worried about what people were thinking about me. By not addressing the issue’s at a base level you can’t go out and fix the bigger problem so you’ve got to say okay okay I’m suffering this issue and everything’s getting me down.
Remind yourself that you’re not to blame! Your wife or your husband are not to blame! Your kids are not to blame! We live in a blame society and when you can’t cope your branded! You can force yourself to adapt to a situation but doing that over an extended period of time can be very very difficult so my advice to anybody out there suffering with depression and anxiety is think about yourself, take a step back and relax.
Depression and anxiety are two different things – depression is somebody falling into a low mood and wanting to cut themselves off and isolate like an island. Stress and anxiety is when your sort of hyper and you’re trying to cope with things.
Whatever the situation is step back, learn about yourself and give yourself time to be able to adapt. Defragment your brain and work out what’s important to you and then slowly over a period of time attempt to mend things and build up that Network again in order to be able to put yourself back on track again.
Well that’s just my advice and it worked for me. I’ve got a great relationship, I started a new job and everything’s wonderful!
We never know when that network in the brain might get overloaded again but at least now from experience I know how to take that information and to bring it forward to a situation where I can now understand where I was and what I need to do. I understand the mechanisms of psychological repair.

I have been practising Yoga for close to 5 years now. Prior to this time, my life had been a day-to-day existence filled with symptoms of depression and low self-esteem. Aggravated by marring acne and burdensome asthma symptoms, not feeling depressed was usually a rare occurrence. A rare occurrence that is; until I discovered Yoga and how it could help with depression treatment.
It is, not a surprise that I was not alone during this time as research has shown that 18% of the UK’s population (10.8 million people) suffer from some sort of anxiety or depression (ONS, 2018). However, what should be the main cause of concern are the many side effects common to anti-depression drugs. Effective as they may be for a while, itís been noted that these depression drugs have several side effects which may include nausea, fatigue, insomnia and some sexual dysfunctions.
Thankfully, as with nearly any human ailment, at least in it’s not fatal stages, drug-free healing is not limited to curing any discomfort-including depression and this without these side-effects. One standout alternative for depression treatment my friends will be the incomparable Yoga.
How is this so? Well, first of all, with Yoga and its gentle movements and poses,
Alpha waves (relaxation) and Theta waves (unconscious memory, dreams and emotions) tend to increase significantly after its execution. This finding is based on a Scandinavian study conducted by Eric Hoffman, Ph.D., that measured brain waves before and after a two-hour Yoga class.
As a result, you tend to have more contact with your own subconscious and emotions. Moreover, after its use, alpha waves increases in the right temporal region of the brain as other studies have shown that people with depression tend to have more alpha activity in the left frontal-temporal region, while optimistic, extroverted people have more alpha activity on the right.
Moreover, with the execution of Yoga, a noted reduction in the hormone known as cortisol and increase in the hormone prolactin occursówhich is believed by many professionals to be the key in producing the anti-depressant effect of electroshock therapy
If this all sounds a bit advanced, perhaps a simpler illustration of how Yoga works effectively for depression treatment may be that it exercises the motor centres of the brain, making the blood flow away from the emotional activity centre; consequently one becomes more receptive to positive thoughts.
Although this can be accomplished by the use of several Yoga poses, I will narrow the wide array of choices down to three simple yet very effective ones namely the Sun Salutations, Shoulder Stand and Relaxation poses.
Depression Treatment: Choice of Yoga poses for depression help
1. The Sun Salutations:
The sun exercises stimulate and balances all systems of the body including the endocrine and nervous systems that have marked effects on our emotions, furthermore they induce deep breathing, which has been known over the ages to help alleviate many a stressful situation. Performed in rounds of three, they actually are a combination of very simple movements executed in a flowing motion. Although they are usually warm up to other Yoga poses, they can stand on their own as a Yoga session so you may not have to spend too much time to reap Yoga’s benefits as an alternative treatment for depression.
2. The Shoulder- Stand:
In spite of what its name may suggest, no worries, this pose is indeed very easy to execute and is the one pose that both old and new Yoga Instructors and writers view as a near panacea for most human ailments including depression. It is essentially a very easy inversion pose that I see most kids practising unknowingly most of us have at some point, so again, it is really easy. Being that when you’re inverted, everything is turned upside down, throwing a new light on old behavioural patterns. Working together with its counter poses, you will see for yourself what this pose can do for depression treatment.
3. The Relaxation Pose:
The daddy of them all! As the name suggests it involves lying motionless on one’s back with emphasis on deep, even breathing and meditation. It is usually performed for several minutes to alleviate stress and mental tension and positive affirmations such as helpful verses from religious books could be mentally repeated during its execution.
Being a Christian myself, one of my favourite verses while executing this pose will be a personalised derivative of Rom 12: 2 – I am being transformed by the renewing of my thoughts.
Depression treatment: Closing thoughts on other factors.
No one is saying that Yoga poses alone will be the end all be all of your depression. No. Poses alone do not constitute Yoga. Breathing exercises (known as pranayama), Meditation, (which could be rooted in your religious or spiritual beliefs) and a proper diet-all being important limbs of Yoga, should be used in your use of Yoga for depression treatment.
These limbs will be subjects of other articles to save space; however, for a depression treatment alternative without unwanted and oft times harmful side effects, dare I say drug-free healing using simple Yoga principles and natural methods might be your best bet, it did work for me.
So the next time depression sends you to the doctor, you may do well to ask for a new prescription for depression treatment-Yoga. I believe it won’t hurt and possibly could help you immensely.
Dysthymic Disorder is a low-grade and yet chronic depression characterized by feelings of sadness or depression associated with lack of interest to do things and including some physical symptoms such as lack of energy, sleep, and concentration.
This is a type of clinical depression that is supposed to be “milder” than Major Depressive Disorder because the symptoms don’t necessarily happen every day. Unlike patients who suffer from MDD, Dysthymic patients are not bed-bound, are still able to work, and do not appear to be sick. But most of these individuals complain that they haven’t felt “normal” or “happy” for a long time.
Moreover, Dysthymic Disorder shows itself by lack of drive and motivation. Hence, relatives and friends tend to misinterpret a person’s mood. Some patients endure the stigma of being considered “lazy” or not “motivated enough” to do worthwhile goals.
As time passes by, patients with this disorder may have difficulty functioning. But because they still appear normal, the illness is not recognized and patients don’t get treated early. A lot of times, they are not referred to a psychiatrist.
Patients experience considerable emotional turmoil. In fact, some dysthymic patients eventually develop a more serious depression called Major Depressive Disorder. When “double depression” (dysthymic disorder and major depression occurring together) happens, patients are so depressed that they become a threat to themselves and become functionally impaired. At this time, psychiatric hospitalisation becomes necessary.
Dysthymic Disorder is a serious health problem that should be recognized and treated promptly. It is an illness that somehow hides its existence from everyone including clinicians and patients themselves.

Be patient and continue to learn from your experiences.

Most people get depressed from time to time, there is the eternal question of whether depression is a real illness. The answer is yes. Pregnancy is a wondrous period in a woman’s life. It is the time when women are excited to be called mothers. It is a great opportunity to learn about a child’s growth and development. But sometimes it can be the other way around. Pregnancy is not always such a happy experience for some. Pregnancy can also be a time for worry. It can also be a time of confusion.
A woman’s decision to begin a pregnancy carries with it the acceptance of the lifelong responsibility to be a parent. Ideally, effective parenting begins even before the moment of conception, when the woman confirms her desire to have a child and is physically and mentally prepared for the challenges of pregnancy, birth, and parenting.
However, most women go through a lot of changes during pregnancy that sometimes causes them stress, as well as numerous emotional and physical changes. As a result, many pregnant women develop depression during their pregnancies.

Because a woman is in a very difficult period of adjustment and less likely to climb out of her despair, hopelessness, and suffering, she poses a danger to herself and her new baby.
Pregnancy is a particularly active field for depression to either start anew or worsen if already a problem. The extra physical, financial, marital, and sexual stresses come whether one is ready or not. On top of that, any new feelings of poor self-image can reinforce depression’s already negative self-image problems.
Preparing for a new baby is a lot of hard work, but the mother’s health should come first. A pregnant woman should resist the urge to get everything done, she should limit her activities and do things that will help her relax. Talking about things that concern a pregnant woman is also very important during these difficult times. A pregnant woman should ask for support, which most often than not, she will get. Remember that taking care of oneself is an essential part of taking care of the unborn child.
Young women who grow up surrounded by family problems and any form of abuse are at high risk of getting eating disorders like anorexia or bulimia, unless they get help and support in dealing with their emotional reactions to their problems. According to research studies, family conflicts can combine with other problems, such as emotional and/or physical abuse, with neglect during childhood, that can set the stage for potential eating disorders.
For many young girls and ladies, their response to family problems during childhood years, not the family problems themselves, seems to have a strong connection to the development of eating disorders. If a girl has been experiencing family problems that lead to physical and/or emotional abuse and neglect, she could grow up without any emotional support coming from them, a factor that is so important for a young woman’s well-being.
In order to escape her negative emotions, a girl may focus intensely on her physical appearance. Thus, by eating in small proportions or by hardly eating at all, a girl can create a distraction for herself which could result in a means of avoiding negative emotions. Somehow, she feels the need to narrow down her focus to something that’s concrete.
Another factor that leads to eating disorders like bulimia could be depression. Some girls can experience depression in school, where bullying is at its peak, and when everybody is pressurised into looking better than others. At this point, girls could feel depressed whenever they see popular girls with slim waists, and from there they could think of losing weight by means of purging, vomiting, and the like. Other girls could get depressed when it comes to relationships, specifically romantic relationships. Of course, girls sometimes have a tendency to get jealous whenever her boyfriend looks at another attractive girl. This is normal, but for girls who have low self-esteem, this is pure punishment. They will eventually have thoughts that they are not as good-looking as the other girl, maybe because of her weight. This can possibly get the girl into hazardous eating habits, which can lead to having anorexia or bulimia.
If this is the case, any girl who suffers from any family problems or is dealing with depression should get professional help immediately. A lot of counselling sessions are available for those girls dealing with eating disorders, and this could benefit them by giving them advise on how to handle their emotions and feelings, together with support and help in fighting their eating disorder. Such sessions can open their minds and think of what is healthy and right and can boost their confidence as well as their self-esteem in order to build their true personality.
Of course, girls should also be open to healthy diet options so that they can help themselves in getting back to shape in a healthier way. Try to see what options might be available diet-wise, since there are a lot of weight loss programs that cater to different people, depending on what they usually eat every day.
