What The Professionals Don’t Want You To Know

As a psychotherapist in private practice for over a decade, I certainly have seen it all: watching my clients suffer through anxiety and stress, watching them go from medication to medication looking for “the right pill”, and rarely finding it, spending inordinate amounts of money desperately trying to find the correct method to make their stress go away.

Can Anxiety Be Cured By A Pill or through Mental Health Counselling?

Anxiety is a complex issue…not just something that can be cured through popping a pill, or through one or two visits to a mental health counselling professional. And while a combination of both medication and counselling can be effective, unfortunately, it can take years to see results…and often a lot of money.

If I Do Decide To Take Medication And See A Therapist, What Is The Best Type Of Therapy And Medication I Should Take To Help My Anxiety?

I can’t answer that for you specifically, because everyone is different (for example, you may have an allergy that precludes you from using a certain type of medication; Or you may not take well to a specific model of psychotherapy). That said, I can say that I have seen many of my clients do pretty well with what is known as “Cognitive Behavioral Therapy”, in combination with a medication that their psychiatrist prescribed.

Isn’t There Any way To Get Rid Of My Anxiety Right Away, Instead Of Waiting The Years It Can Take For Medication and Counselling to Kick In?

Yes. For every year it takes to go through therapy and anti-anxiety medication, people can actually learn to make their anxiety disappear in 10 to 15 minutes. That doesn’t mean that counselling and medication aren’t viable options…but they are not the end-all cure-all for anxiety…they are merely supplements to help you get better. The majority of the work is done by “you”. Not to mention…you save a great amount of your money and time.

Why Don’t Psychiatrists Ever Tell You That You Can Learn to Make Your Anxiety Disappear On Your Own?

Bottom line: Because they need to make a living. If you did not see them for visits, these docs would not be in business. Don’t get me wrong…there are some darn good professionals out there in the field of psychiatry.

But, the fact is, if the docs and shrinks let you know that you can learn, in 10-15 minutes, the secrets to curing your anxiety…they would lose a great deal of income.

Overview of Mental Health Counselling

Mental health counselling or clinical counselling is a practice in psychology that helps relieve psychological disorders or distress by promoting personal development. It also practices psychotherapy, consultation, forensic investigation specifically forensic testimony, formulation, implementation and evaluation of plans and programs for the treatment of psychological dysfunction and research. Because of the nature of this field, it is usually monitored as a mental health profession.

Mental health counselling has its roots from the later part of 19th century. And as the field of psychology grew, branches began to develop, among them is counselling psychology and clinical counselling- both are useful in mental health assessment and counselling.

While closely associated with clinical psychology, there are still marked differences between the two practices.

For one, counselling psychology is used by psychotherapist and counsellors to help patients with milder psychopathological concerns. On the other hand, clinical counselling deals with more severe and advanced forms of psychological disorders such as schizophrenia and psychosomatic disorders. Examples of disorders that could be treated by counselling psychology are the stress-related disorders. In essence, these are just minor mental health illness that requires very little (if there is any) medical interventions.

This method tries to address minor psychological concerns and make use of counselling techniques. This is possible since patients subjected under this method are still in control of their mind. Choosing a Therapist Step-by-Step

Therapy is a collaborative process, so finding the right match is critical. After you find someone, keep in mind that therapy is work and sometimes can be painful. However, it also can be rewarding and life changing.

What are the steps for choosing a therapist?

  1. See your primary care physician to rule out a medical cause of your problems. Many physical disorders can mimic psychological ones.
  2. After you know your problems are not caused by a medical condition, find out what the mental health coverage is under your insurance policy or through Medicaid/Medicare.
  3. Get two or three referrals before making an appointment. Specify age, sex, race, or religious background if those characteristics are important to you.
  4. Call to find out about appointment availability, location, and fees. Find out if they take your insurance or if they charge by income.
  5. Make sure the therapist has experience helping people whose problems are similar to yours. Don’t be afraid to ask about experience.
  6. If you are satisfied with the answers, make an appointment.
  7. During your first visit, describe those feelings and problems that led you to seek help. Find out how the therapist reacts and what options you are given for treatment. Do you feel comfortable with your choices?
  8. Be sure the psychotherapist does not take a “cookie cutter” approach to your treatment – different psychotherapies and medications are tailored to meet specific needs. You are an individual and your therapist must show that perspective.
  9. After your initial visit, take some time to explore how you felt about the therapist. Is there a connection? Do you feel comfortable?
  10. If everything meets your approval, schedule your next appointment. If not, go back to the list you gathered in Step 3 and start over again.
